Video of Josie Pereira

Woman and her audience

"Historically, the male gaze has dominated our perceptions of women. Often portraying the nude female subject in private, vulnerable moments; bathing, changing, or in bed. This voyeuristic gaze informs how we see women. More importantly, it is responsible for how women see themselves.

By applying my own female gaze to play on tensions between the female performer and her audience in this work, I intend to reform perceptions of women and reorient understandings of our experiences that departs from objectification and embraces empowerment."

About PAC Commission: Reform

The primary objective of the Postmodern Art Club (PAC) is to underscore the role we play in enhancing the accessibility and perception of art and culture. In line with the postmodern tradition, PAC seeks to challenge false dichotomies that define our world and to reform the hierarchical structures that the higher culture has established. In the inaugural edition of PAC's commission, three artists were commissioned to produce wholly original works that align with the theme of Reform. The commission's goal is to grant artists complete artistic autonomy, allowing them the freedom to experiment and create works they have long desired to create but have not had the opportunity to do so. We invited emerging artists who wanted to use this opportunity to express the reformation that is needed in society through their artistic perspective.
